Which Tire Size is Right for Me?

Trying to pick out tires can be a difficult task to do. The first question you need to ask yourself is what size of tire do I want and will I need to have to make any modifications to the vehicle. Every vehicle has a standard sizes they use. Start with that number then go up from there. There are a number of resources online to help you find the perfect fit you want.

Off Road Truck Tires

If you are looking for larger off road tires you need to keep some things in consideration. The bigger the tire, the more clearance you will need to prevent any type of rubbing against the fenders. A body lift may be needed to get the clearance you need if you are going for that strong off road raised look. This won’t get you any performance enhancements. If you are looking to increase the performance on trails you may want to consider a suspension lift to increase the wheel travel ability.

If you decide to put on larger truck tires, this will make your vehicle work a lot harder because of the additional weight. This can put a strain on your axles and shocks. They also alter the stock gear ratio which is set by the manufacturer. To compensate for this and prevent any breakdowns, it is recommended that you get new ring and pinion gears as well as performance shocks.

Which Tire Should I Get for Off Roading?

Radial truck tires are not recommended for harsh terrain. The performance they give on pavement make up for that. Radial tires last longer, have better handling and give a smooth ride on paved roads. If you break down on the side of the road you will need some of the basic tools. You should always keep these in your trunk, glove box, or somewhere in your car just in case a break down happens. The kit consists of a flashlight, duct tape, electrical tape, tie wraps, screwdriver with multi tips, crescent wrench, wire cutter, and more. Take a look at the picture to see an appropriate tool kit.

Broken Window

All you need to temporarily fix a broken window until you get it fixed is a garbage bag and duct date. If it’s available get the contractor trash bag because they are three times thicker than regular household trash bags. Cut the bag to fit the window then tape the edges down using duct tape. Try to get the bag as tight as possible to reduce noise levels from the wind and will also last longer.

Blown Radiator Hose

If you blow the radiator hose towards the end where it’s clamp it could be an easy fix. Unclamp the hose then cut off the bad part and re-attach it back with the clamp. If the break on the hose is towards the middle and the first option just mentioned is not possible then you will want to patch the hose with rescue tape. It is a self-fusing silicone. This tape can take up to 700 pounds per square inch of pressure and can tolerate temperatures up to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. The first step is to let the hose cool down so that the tape can get a better seal. If possible you will want to mix water and antifreeze with a 50-50 mix. If you are in a tight situation, water will work too.

Exhaust Pipe That Fell

If your exhaust pipe bracket(s) break then you will need to be able to temporarily hoist it up so it doesn’t drag on the ground. The first and most important step is to let your exhaust pipe cool down. It will be very hot and you can be burnt badly if you’re not careful. You will need some sort of stronger durable wire. A metal clothes hanger will work perfectly. Just take the coat hanger and stretch it out then secure one end to the frame of the vehicle and wrap around the exhaust then secure the loose end to the frame again. Make sure you don’t secure the wire next to any moving parts like the drive shaft and don’t attach to any electrical wires.

Blown Heater Hose

The heater hoses are about the size of a garden hose and they bring coolant from the engine to the heater core which is on the firewall or under the dash. Like the blown radiator hose, if the break happens near the end, cut off the bad part of the hose and re-attach it. If you don’t have rescue tape, which is explained in the blown radiator hose section, you can cut the hose at the firewall and then bend it over and kink the hose like you would on a garden hose and secure the kinked part with tie wraps. Both hoses need to be kinked and secured. This will allow the coolant to stay in the engine but make sure you top off the radiator as soon as possible.

Stuck Lug Nuts

If you have a flat tire, one of the required tasks to change the tire is to remove lug nuts. Sometimes those lug nuts are stuck on there either from corrosion or they were tightened too much from the last night they were put on. It doesn’t matter if you have chrome wheels or black rims. If this is the case the best way to get them unstuck is to put the tire iron parallel to the ground with it aiming left. This way you can set on it and use your weight to try to break it free. This process usually works. If it doesn’t break the lug nut free then you may have to get a pipe and put that over the tire iron to give it a longer handle. Then step on the lengthened part and use your weight to push down to free the lug nut. If you need new tires consider looking into custom wheel and tire packages.
